Seven Dhaka University first year students who were arrested on charge of committing admission test fraud to secure their enrolment last year gave judicial statements on Thursday night before a Dhaka court.

Seven separate metropolitan magistrates recorded the statements of Tanvir Ahmed Mollick, Muhammad Bayezid, Nahid Iftekhar, Fardin Ahmed Sabbir, Prosenjit Das, Rifat Hossain and Azizul Hakim, all arrested by a team of Criminal Investigation Department on Tuesday.

CID’s assistant superintendent of police Mohibul Islam, also investigation officer of the case lodged against them with Shahbagh police, produced them before the court praying for recording their statements.

Later, they were sent to jail.

On Wednesday, a Dhaka court placed the seven students on a day’s remand in the case.

Mozammel Haque, recording officer of the chief metropolitan magistrate court, said that the accused gave ‘confessional statements’ in the case.

The seven students were arrested by the CID’s organised crime unit with the help of university authorities.

The unit had earlier arrested Navid Anjum Tonoy, 24, also a DU student, and Enamul Hoque Akash, 19, a Secondary School Certificate examinee, for assisting in admission fraud by providing electronic devices.

On October 20, 2017, the CID team with the help of DU proctor’s office detained Bangladesh Chhatra League central assistant secretary Mohiuddin Rana, a master’s student of physics department at the university, and applied chemistry department’s first year student Abdullah al Mamun from Shahidullah Hall with electronic devices hours before the ‘D’ unit admission test.

Later, the Dhaka University syndicate suspended Mohiuddin and Abdullah while the BCL central committee expelled the two from the organisation.
