A Dhaka court today granted bail to the two suspended teachers of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College in a case filed on charge of provoking the suicide of a ninth grader in December last year.
Metropolitan Magistrate Rashed Chowdhury passed the order considering the age of the teachers after acting principal of the school Nazneen Ferdous and morning shift in-charge Zinat Akhtar surrendered before it and sought bail.
On December 5, class teacher of class nine Hasna Hena, 51, was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of police but she secured bail later.
WHO COMMITED SUICIDE AND WHY?
Aritry Adhikary, who was allegedly caught cheating in the in tests, hanged herself on December 3, 2018 after watching her parents being subjected to severe admonishment by the school authority. Aritry's father Dilip Adhikary filed the case with Paltan Police Station on the following day.
It sparked a wave of outrage inside the school and outside, compelling students to demonstrate at the campus for three days demanding justice over the incident.
WHAT ACTIONS DID THE AUTHORITIES TAKE AGAINST THE TEACHERS?
The Viqarunnisa Noon School and College authorities on December 5 suspended Nazneen Ferdous, Zinat Akhtar and Hasna Hena over the suicide of Aritry Adhikary.
The teachers were suspended following an education ministry order and with students' protest gaining momentum.
In a letter, the ministry also ordered the chairman of the Dhaka Education Board and the director general of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education to cancel the teachers' Monthly Payment Order (MPO), stop payment of their wages, and take departmental action against them.
