BU students continue demo demanding removal of VC

Desk Report |

Barishal University students continued their agitation for the eighth consecutive day on Wednesday demanding removal of vice-chancellor SM Imamul Haque.

Protesters held a rally in the morning on the campus and vowed to continue their agitation. They also wrote slogans with blood donated by the students on the walls to press their demand. Students complained that the university authorities closed the university, its canteens and medical centre and even disrupted water and electricity supply so that the students could not continue their protests.

On other hand, VC Imamul Haque called on the students to go back to the classes as he had already expressed regret for his speech that hurt the students.

A vice-chancellor could not be removed for such an incident, he said adding that a vice-chancellor might resign if he or she was asked by the chancellor of the university or the prime minister of the nation.

Barishal deputy commissioner Ajiar Rahman said he was trying to bring an end to the deadlock by consulting both sides.

BU registrar Hasinur Rahman, now staying in Dhaka, said they asked the students to vacate the halls, but did not order the power cut.

BU students started agitation on 29 March a day after VC Imamul Haque during a speech in a Debating Society programme said the students who foiled the university’s Independence Day celebrations were ‘sons of Razakars’.
Since then, the students stated agitation claiming that the vice-chancellor had humiliated them.

University authorities closed the university for an indefinite period amid the protests on Thursday.
