BUET student on remand for ‘spreading rumours’ during student protests

Police have taken into custody a BUET student for questioning on charges of spreading rumours on the social media about the road safety protests. 

Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders caught mechanical engineering student Daiyan Nafis and handed him to police on Wednesday. 

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Fahad Bin Amin Chowdhury granted police four days to quiz Nafis in custody on Thursday. 

Police also arrested online portal Zoombangla’s CEO Yusuf Chowdhury on Wednesday for allegedly publishing fake news on the protests. The court remanded him for a day.

Inspector Rafiqul Islam of Police’s counterterrorism unit produced both Nafis and Yusuf in the court in two separate cases started at the Ramna Police Station.
