Call drops, slow internet to rise, BTRC official says

Desk Report |

The government decided today to partially reduce bandwidth capacity of two leading private telecom operators of the country -- Grameenphone and Robi -- as the companies did not pay the due amount that was detected in audits.

Thirty percent bandwidth capacity of Grameenphone and 15 that of Robi would remain blocked until they pay their due, Zakir Hossain Khan, senior assistant director of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) confirmed this to Reporter.

This would come into effect immediately after the concerned authorities receives the notice from the government , he said.

Reducing the bandwidth would hamper the services provided by the company with an increase in call drops and slow internet speed, he added.

Grameenphone has Tk 12579.95 crore as due and Robi on the other hand needs to pay the government Tk 867.24 crore.

Of the total amount, Grameenphone owes Tk 8494.01 crore to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and Tk 4085.94 crore to National Board of Revenue (NBR).
