Clash over stalking schoolgirl, 10 hurt

At least 10 people were injured in a clash between the people of Betgari and Chandanpur villages under Atmul union in Shibganj upazila of the district yesterday over stalking a schoolgirl at Betgari village recently

Police and locals said the girl, a Class VIII student of Chandanpur United High School, and granddaughter of Afzal Hossain, an influential man of Chandanpur, was stalked by some youths at Betgari village a few days back. Locals later settled the matter.

When some people of Betgari village went to Chandanpur village on Sunday night to attend a religious function, they were beaten up. On Monday morning, another resident of Betgari, Bitu Mia, was beaten up at Chandanpur, locals said.

Following the incidents, people of Chandanpur and Betgari, equipped with lethal weapons, attacked each other in the afternoon, leaving at least 10 people from both sides injured. The injured were admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.

On information, police rushed to the spot and used truncheons to disperse the clashing groups.

Contacted, Officer-in-Charge Ahsan Habib of Shibganj Police Station said police have been deployed in the area to avert any further incident.
