College girl hacked by BCL leader

A female student of Sylhet Government Women’s College, who was hacked with a sharp weapon by her alleged boyfriend a day ago, has been brought to Dhaka and admitted to Square Hospitals in critical condition.

Khadiza Begum Nargis was sent to the capital in the early hours of Tuesday, said Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital’s Deputy Director Abdus Salam.

He said, “Khadiza’s head, hands and legs bore sharp weapon wounds. She was sent to Dhaka as the condition of her head wound became serious.”

Khadiza, an honours second year student, was mercilessly attacked at MC College campus on Monday afternoon by Badrul Islam, an economics department student at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).

Islam, who is also the assistant secretary of the Bangladesh Chhatra League’s (BCL) university unit, was, however, detained by police right after the incident.

Shah Paran police OC Shahjalal Munsi told reporters that Islam had attacked Khadiza when she came out after sitting for the second year final test at MC College exam centre.

“We have come to know that Islam and Khadiza were dating. Our initial suspicion is that Islam did this heinous act as he was angry about a recent spate of quarrel with her.”

Meanwhile, a video footage of the attack, recorded on mobile phone by a bystander, has gone viral on social media.

On the video’s comment section on Facebook, some alleged that several accomplices of Badrul Islam were with him at the time of the attack.

No case was filed over the incident until Tuesday morning. Police will take next step once a case is started, said OC Munsi.

SUST BCL unit’s General Secretary Imran Ahmed said Islam is the son of one Saidur Rahman of Sunamganj.

Ahmed said organisational action would be taken against Islam if a case is lodged against him.
