Police have arrested a Kabi Nazrul Government College student over the murder of a teenage girl inside a cabin of a Patuakhali-bound launch at Dhaka’s Sadarghat.

The victim has been identified as Parul Akter, 16, from Aganagar at Kerniganj in Dhaka.

The vessel workers caught and handed over the student, Al Mamun, to police on Wednesday afternoon on finding Akter’s body lying a in a pool of blood.

Mamun had booked the cabin No. 308 of the launch, Eagle-3, saying he and his parents would travel to their ancestral home in Patuakhali, Sadarghat Police Camp Sub-Inspector Delwar Hossain told the reporters.

Quoting the launch workers, the police official said the victim was not with Mamun when he boarded the vessel.

A cabin boy called the others after seeing blood tricking out of the cabin around 4:30pm, the SI said.

The workers then caught Mamun and informed the police.

Kotwali Police Station Inspector Parvez Islam said a knife used as the murder weapon had been recovered from the cabin.

“We are interrogating Mamun to know the motive,” he added.
