CU teacher Maidul released on bail

Desk Report |
Jail authorities on Tuesday released Maidul Islam, a Chittagong University teacher arrested for posting derogatory remarks on the prime minister on Facebook. Senior jail superintendent Prasanta Kumar Banik said that they released Maidul Islam Assistant Professor of Chittagong University Sociology Department from jail Tuesday morning after scrutinising his bail bond.

On Oct 9, the High Court granted bail to Maidul, but he was not freed from prison immediately as the bail document had not reached Chattogram jail authorities.  On September 24, Chattogram court ordered to send him to jail on charges of defaming prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Facebook.

The court sent him to jail denying his bail petition, after he surrendered before the court on completion of his eight weeks bail granted by the High Court. Maidul said that he wants to go back to his classes. He said that many people are still in prison for expressing their thoughts. No-one should be obstructed from expressing their views.

On July 23 a former Chhatra League leader, Iftekharul Islam, filed a case with the police under section 57 of ICT Act against Maidul after he allegedly made derogatory remarks about prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Facebook while expressing his support for the quota protestors.

On July 15, after Chhatra League men issued public threats directing him and his family, Maidul, left the campus along with his family. The following day, BCL searched for him at his office and lodged a complaint against Maidul to the department chairperson.

They demanded necessary steps against him, claiming that Maidul has been instigating students and teachers and spreading hate speech against the government on Facebook.

Later, the professor sought security from Chittagong University authorities for his safe return to the campus.
CU Bangabondhu Parishad submitted a memorandum to the VC to take action against Maidul Islam. Maidul had received an interim bail from the High Court on Aug 6.

After the end of the eight-week bail period, Maidul sought an extended bail from the Chattogram district and sessions judge’s court on Sep 24. The court rejected the appeal and sent him to jail.
The Chittagong University administration temporarily suspended him on Sep 25.
