Renowned local, Indian artistes and students of Dhaka University’s music and dance departments captivated the audience with their performances at Rabindra-Nazrul Utsab held on Thursday at TSC Auditorium on DU campus.

The festival, which was organised by faculty of arts of DU, featured cultural show and a discussion where discussants analysed contributions of Nobel Laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore and national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam to Bangla literature.

Dhaka University pro vice chancellor Dr Nasreen Ahmed was present as the chief guest at the festival. Chairperson of department of dance Rezwana Choudhury Bannya, also a renowned Rabindra Sangeet artiste, and faculty of arts dean Dr Abu Md. Delwar Hosain, among others, attended the event.

The discussants analysed major achievements and contributions of the two poets, who had enriched almost all branches of Bangla literature.

While discussing Tagore’s achievements and contributions, Dr Anisuzzaman said, ‘Rabindranath Tagore left his mark on each and every branch of Bengali literature. Tagore was, as he himself once said, like a woman with many lovers and unwilling to leave any of them. He loved to try his hand in diverse fields. In the last ten years of his life, he became a painter and added a new feather to his crown’, said Anisuzzaman.

Nazrul researcher and national professor Dr Rafiqul Islam spoke about Nazrul’s non-communal stance. ‘Nazrul wrote against communalism and promoted non-communal spirit’, said Islam.

Following the discussion, students of department of music commenced the cultural show with chorus renditions of Tagore’s devotional song Aloker ei jharnadharay and Nazrul’s inspirational song Joy hok. Students of department of dance presented recitals synchronised with the songs.

Students of dance department also presented a colourful choreography titled ‘Rituranga’ synchronised with songs glorifying the six seasons.
