Efforts sought for saving nearly extinct rivers

Activists of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) unit of the Riverine People have sought comprehensive efforts in saving the nearly extinct rivers of the country.

They laid special importance on creating social awareness about importance of ensuring uninterrupted water flow in the rivers round the year to improve environment, ecology, national economy and bio-diversity.

The opinion came at a human chain organised by the Riverine People at Afanullah High School premises situated on the bank of the nearly extinct Ichhamati at Mahiganj area in the city in observance of the World Rivers Day- 2017 on Sunday afternoon.

The students, teachers and members of the School Governing Body, leaders and activists of BRUR unit of the Riverine People participated in the human chain arranged with the theme of ‘Save the Ichhamati River of Rangpur.’

Later, a discussion was arranged there with Associate Professor of the Department of Bengali of BRUR and Director of the Riverine People Dr Tuhin Wadud in the chair.

President of the School Governing Body Abdur Rahman, activists of the Riverine People Sristi Sarker and Rubel Ahmed, among others, addressed.

The speakers called upon the government for taking effective steps to save all of the nearly extinct rivers which are the lifeline for ecology, economy, environment and heritage of the country. Dr Wadud put emphasis on engaging comprehensive efforts in ensuring pollution-free rivers with better management to keep those alive for better future of the next generations and improving environment, ecology and bio-diversity.
