DUCSU POLLSFinal list of candidates published, electioneering begins

Dhaka University authorities on Sunday published the final lists of candidates for the elections to the Dhaka University Central Students Union and hall unions scheduled for March 11.

In the DUCSU polls, 229 candidates are contesting for the 25 positions, including 21 for vice-president, 14 for general secretary and 13 for assistant general secretary.

After scrutinising the nomination papers, the authorities published the final list on its website ducsu.du.ac.bd.

In DUCSU polls, 11 students are contesting for liberation war affairs secretary, 9 for science and technology secretary, 9 for common room and cafeteria secretary, 11 for international secretary, eight for the literature secretary, 12 for cultural secretary, 11 for sports secretary, 10 for student transport secretary, 14 for social welfare secretary and 86 for member.

Earlier on 26 February, the university authorities published the primary list of candidates disqualifying seven candidates. Five of them, however, regained their candidatures following a review.

Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon, Golam Rabbani and Saddam Hussain form Chhatra League, Mustafizur Rahman, Anisur Rahman and Khorshed Alam Sohel from Chhatra Dal and Liton Nandi, Faysal Mahmud and Sadekul Islam from left alliance are contesting for the positions of vice-president, general secretary and assistant general secretary respectively.

Independent candidate Dhaka University Journalists Association president ARM Asifur Rahman and Bangladesh Chhatra Federation’s Dhaka University chapter president Umme Habiba Benozir are contesting for central general secretary while from Swadhikar Satantra Jote, an independent platform, Abu Raihan Khan is contesting for central assistant general secretary.

The university authorities also published the lists of final candidates for 13 positions in each of the hall unions.

Earlier, nominations of some candidates from Chhatra League, Chhatra Dal, left leaning student bodies and independent panels were cancelled for providing flawed information and for not being on the final electoral roll published on March 20. 

Candidates from various panels including Chhatra League, Chhatra Dal, Left Alliance and independent started to campaign officially on the campus. Some were seen exchanging views with students.
The university authorities would publish supplementary electoral roll on March 5 while vice-chancellor M Akhtaruzzaman would address at Senate building of about the DUCSU polls.

Chief returning officer Mahfuzur Rahman said that the candidates could run electioneering from 10:00am to midnight until 24 hours before the polling and stern action would be taken if any candidates violated the electoral code of conduct.

Chhatra League leaders and activists allegedly forced and threatened some independent candidates asking them to withdraw their candidacy.
