Govt urged to declare primary education as ‘right’

গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশ সরকারEducationists, lawmakers and right groups at a discussion meeting today urged the government to declare the primary education as ‘right’ to secure cent per cent enrolment in the country.

They said now Bangladesh is near to achieve cent per enrolment in primary education and if it is declared as ‘right’, the remaining 2.3 per cent children would be come under primary education, which would also pave the way of universal and quality education in the country.

Bangladesh has now secured the enrolment of 97.7 per cent children under primary education.

Parliamentary Cocas on Child Rights (PCCR) and Save the Children jointly organized the meeting tiled “Primary Education for All” in a city hotel.

Primary and Mass Education Minister Mustafizur Rahman, MP, Deputy Speaker Advocate Fazle Rabbi, MP, Dr Enamur Rahman, MP, Advocate Shamsul Alam, MP, Advocate Hosneara, MP, Senior Lawyer of Supreme Court Barrister Amirul Islam, Department of Primary Education Director General M Alamgir and Save the Children acting Country Director Tim White spoke on the occasion with Executive Director of Campaign for Popular Education (CAMPE) Rasheda K Choudhury in the chair.

Advocate Fazle Rabbi said the Constitution, formulated in 1972, in its clause 17 spoke about the rights of education logically and later in 1990, “Mandatory Primary Education Act” has been formulated. “Education would be turned into ‘right’ if the law is updated.”

Mustafizur Rahman urged the teachers, authority concerned and lawmakers to be more responsible to ensure universal quality education in the country. “Each child born with inherent talent and teacher is responsible to nurture the talent towards right direction that is why they (teacher) have to be more responsible,” he added.

The minister also emphasized for formulation of a sustainable plan through elaborate discussion nationally.
