JU punishes 17 students

The Jahangirnagar University authorities have punished 17 students for their involvement in sexual harassment of girls, drug abuse and hooliganism.

The decision, taken in a syndicate meeting on January 18, was made public on January 29 in an official notice, said the university’s acting registrar, Rahima Kaniz.

Eleven students of microbiology department were suspended for different terms ranging from three months to one year on charge of sharing distorted and indecent photographs of girl students and female teachers on a Facebook group. 

Nayem-e-Akter, Ijaj Ahmed, Mehedi Hasan and Iqbal Hossain were suspended for a year, Sajib Hossain, Al-Amin Shaishab, Abu Nayem, and GM Tariqul Islam for six months, Shahriar Khan, Nahidul Islam, and Omar Faruq for three months. These microbiology students, except Nahidul Islam and Omar Faruq, were asked to pay Tk 5,000 as penalty. All the students are of 45th batch.

The syndicate also suspended Azgar Hossain Rabbi, a fourth-year student of drama and dramatics department for three months for harassing a female student of the department two years ago.

Computer science and engineering student Sazzad Hossain Sayem and Bangla department student Moeen Uddin Jony were suspended for six months as they were caught red-handed while taking drugs in Room 335 of AFM Kamaluddin Hall on August 11, 2017.  

The authorities also issued written warnings to eight other students who were found involved in the same incident.
Drama and dramatics student Ridwan Rashed Soyan and KM Mahid Hasan and marketing student Ahsanuzzaman Shaon were temporarily suspended on charge of assaulting three students on the campus. They all are the student of 47th batch.
