JUST teachers go on strike protesting at BCL attack

Desk Report |

Teachers of Jessore University of Science and Technology continued strike for the second consecutive day on Sunday protesting at the attack by ruling Awami League’s student body Bangladesh Chatra League on a human chain of the teachers on the campus on Saturday.

The human chain was formed in protest against hurling abusive words on the JUST Teachers’ Association president Professor Iqbak Kabir Zahid by a former BCL leader, the association members said.

On the other hand, JUST unit BCL sat with vice-chancellor Professor Anwar Hossain and placed five-point charter of demands including removal of Professor Iqbak Kabir Zahid from the university, removal of anti-ragging posters, scraping Prachya Sangha, a social platform in Jashore town that arranged an orientation programme for the students, cutting down excessive semester, laboratory and other fees and ensuring deposit receipts for any type of payments, said Humaira Azmira Arin, general secretary of Sheikh Hasina Hall unit BCL.
‘We’re waiting for a positive result,’ she added.

Earlier, the BCL activists led by Humaira Azmira Arin swooped on a human chain of the teachers and damaged microphones on Saturday noon, the teachers’ association president said.

Iqbak Kabir Zahid earlier told New Age that he scolded Humaira Azmira Arin for removing some anti-ragging posters on January 8 and that is why, Anwar Hossain Bipul, former general secretary, Jashore district unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League threatened him and used abusive words towards him over his mobile phone on the day, for which teachers and other employees formed a human chain on the campus on Saturday. But as soon as it formed the human chain, BCL men led by Arin swooped on it. They also damaged microphones.

Anwar Hossain Bipul, former general secretary, Jashore district unit of BCL, however, said that the teachers’ association formed a counter programme in place of BCL’s continuous programme. ‘They raised the allegation against us as we protested their negative acts,’ he added.

‘The teachers dishonoured Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and prime minister Sheikh Hasina,’ he added.
Teachers of Jessore University of Science and Technology could not be able to form a human chain on the university campus on Saturday as Bangladesh Chhatra League activists led by Humaira Azmira Areen swooped on them.

Teachers and other employees of the university, however, formed a human chain for a very short period under police protection two hours later, eyewitnesses said.
