Madrassah education needs to be modernised: Dipu Moni

Education minister Dipu Moni on Monday said that the curriculum of madrassah education needed to be revised keeping pace with the modern education system.

She also said that the current education system required modernisation to eliminate extremism and other contradictory views from the society.

‘Around 15 lakh students are studying in different madrassahs across the country but the government has no control over their education system. The government has to establish its control over the madrassah education system to ensure concerted development of the country,’ the minister said.

She came up with the remarks while addressing at discussion programme as chief guest. Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee organised the programme marking the 96th birth anniversary of Professor Kabir Choudhury, an eminent academics, litterateur and also the advisory council chairman of the committee, at Engineers’ Institution of Bangladesh in the capital.

‘KabirChowdhury was a courageous person and he motivated others to be courageous. He helped us in many hard situations,’ said Dipu Moni. He was a secular person and he struggled to establish secularism in the country until his death, she said.

‘Quality and progressive education system can promote secularism,’ said Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee president Shahriar Kabir while presenting a memorial lecture on Professor Kabir Chowdhury.

‘A science based education system has to be introduced in the madrassahs to make the institutions progressive,’ he said.

‘Though the passing rate has increased, most of the students are not getting quality education, said Bangabandhu Professor Muntasir Mamun while addressing the function.

Mentioning the crisis of teachers in primary and secondary level schools across the country, he said that teachers remained absent in most of the educational institutions in the rural areas.

He urged the government to recruit sufficient number of teachers in the primary and secondary education sectors. The programme was chaired by Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee vice-president Shyamoli Nasrin Chowdhury. Cultural activist Ramendu Majumdar and Professor Shahin Chowdhury also addressed the programme, among others.
