Mental healthcare cell formed at IU

Desk Report |

The Islamic University authorities formed a seven-member mental healthcare cell on the campus in Kushtia on Tuesday, to counsel students against the tendency of committing suicide.

The university vice-chancellor, Professor M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari, formed the cell, headed by law department Professor Reba Mondal. Other members on the committee are assistant proctor Shammy Akter, law and legal studies department Assistant Professor M Amzad Hossain, law and land management department Lecturer Shahida Akter Asha, Islamic University Journalists Association vice-presidents KM Mahfuz Mishu, Mominur Rahman and Mithila Farzana.

At least five students of the university committed suicide in the last year.  The university authorities found that the incidents of suicide were consequences of different conditions like depression, love affair and family feud.

On October 19, Nazmul Hossain, a third year student of law department, committed suicide by hanging himself with the ceiling at Saddam Hossain Hall following a family feud.

‘The university authorities have formed the cell to prevent the suicidal tendency of the students,’ IU proctor Professor M Mahbubar Rahman said. Reba Mondal told New Age that they would work for the betterment of the students so that no one committed suicide from depression.
