Most of the private universities are aimed at business instead of exercising and dissemination of knowledge, said public intellectual and professor emeritus Serajul Islam Choudhury.
Universities lack a standard of education and usually have poor academic and laboratory facilities, he said in an interview. He continued that most private universities fail to achieve acceptance from major sections of the society, alleging that some are involved in certificate business. Students are charged heavily for admission and other academic activities. These charges are not justifiable as only a small amount from these goes towards teaching, academic, and extracurricular sectors.
Inadequate classrooms and lab facilities, inexperienced teachers, sub-standard libraries and playgrounds have caused many private universities to be regarded as merely certificate providers while actual education of the students is left ignored. He expressed discontent at how the universities are able to continue to operate without heeding the rules set by the government.
