‘The newborn baby died at 10:30pm on Saturday. We could not help it, as it was given birth to a in a unhealthy condition amid utter negligence,’ said Enam Medical College Hospital doctor Begum Sheuli Akhter.

Earlier, Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall authorities rescued the baby from Room number 426 by breaking lock of a trunk.

The mother of the newborn baby, who is a third-year student of botany department of the university, was undergoing treatment in a hospital.

According to her hallmates and friends, they learnt the matter in the afternoon on Saturday.

But, before that, she (the mother) kept her baby into her trunk and went to university’s medical centre for treatment.

Later, she was sent to Enam Medical College Hospital as her condition was vulnerable.

Meanwhile, the students in the hall heard the baby cry and informed it to the hall officers who broke open the door of the room and rescued the baby from a trunk. The officers took the baby to the medical centre that referred the baby to Enam hospital.

Doctor Abu Jafor Md Saleh of JU medical centre said, ‘The body of the newborn turned blue when he was brought to this medical centre. Later, we sent the baby to Enam Medical College Hospital after giving oxygen.’

Hall provost Azibur Rahman said, ‘It’s very sensitive issue. We formed a four member probe body headed by residential teacher Labiba Katun Tania and asked it to submit a report within ten days.’

About the death of new-born baby Azibur Rahman said, ‘The newborn baby might have died due to the negligence of its mother as she did not take care of her and the baby during pregnancy. Moreover, as the mother kept her newborn baby into a trunk, the baby’s condition becomes vulnerable.’

Meanwhile, the father’s identity of the baby was found after a master’s student of JU marketing department claimed to take responsibility of the ‘baby and the mother.’ He also claimed that they got married a year ago.
