To arrest dropout rate at primary level, the government has decided to give stipend to one million more students increasing the number of stipend recipients to 14 million.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic of Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday approved the revised proposal for expanding the project ‘Primary Education Stipend Project-3rd phase (1st revised)’ involving Tk 69.23 billion.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the weekly ECNEC meeting held at the NEC conference room.

The stipend project was approved with a total of nine projects with an overall cost of Tk 103.32 billion which would be spent from the government’s allocation for Annual Development Programme, state minister for finance and planning MA Mannan told reporters after the meeting.

Of the nine projects, five projects are new while four are revised ones, he said.

Mannan said the tenure of ‘Primary Education Stipend Project-3rd phase’ was extended as it had played a very positive role to check dropout and increase literacy in the country.

The tenure of the implementation of the original project was from July 2015 to June 2017. It was revised later and extended up to December 2019, he said, adding that the estimated cost of the project was increased to Tk 69.23 billion from Tk 30.67 billion.
