Police release Dhaka University student detained over ‘Facebook rumours’

Desk Report |

Police detectives have released a Dhaka University student hours after detaining her on charges of spreading rumours.

Members of police’s Detective Branch whisked Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi, a postgraduate student of sociology department, away from in front of her Shamsunnahar Hall around 8pm on Tuesday, witnesses said.

Proctor Golam Rabbani said police had informed him before female members of DB detained Emi to quiz her for her suspected involvement in spreading different contents on Facebook.

The law enforcers later decided to release her on deposition, Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesman Masudur Rahman told around 11:30pm.

Contacted again after midnight, Proctor Rabbani said police released Emi to an assistant proctor and a house tutor of the hall from the DB headquarters.

Emi from Khulna actively participated in the protests for review of quota system in government jobs.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police said in their news website they arrested Emi on charges of trying to change the course of the movement by spreading rumours on the social media.

DMP News, however, later retracted the story without any clarification.

According to her Facebook account, she is a former general secretary of Slogan ’71 and executive member of blood donation organisation Badhan. She is also involved with the Dhaka University Debating Club.

She recently uploaded posts in support of the student protests for safe roads.
