Primary teachers thank Sheikh Hasina

Desk Report |

An organisation of government primary school assistant teachers thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday for promising to address their demand of fixing wage discrimination.

They said they had been protesting for a long time demanding reduction of the wage gap between assistant teachers and headmasters – posts that require similar qualifications.

But assistant teachers are paid in the 14th grade while headmasters get 11th grade, Bangladesh Primary School Assistant Teachers’ Society (BPSATS) members told media at the Jatiya Press Club.

“We held the briefing to thank Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for including our demand in her party’s manifesto,” said BPSATS chief Mohammad Shamsuddin Masud.

“We want the government to meet our demand as soon as possible after the December 30 election,” he added.

Masud said they had staged a hunger strike protest at the Central Shaheed Minar in December last year but called it off after Minister Mostafizur Rahman assured them of addressing the issue.

There are an estimated 3,50,000 assistant primary school teachers, the speakers said.

“Primary teachers are playing a very important role in teaching our future generations. We should give these teachers priority,” said BPSATS adviser Majharul Islam Sohel.
