Private universities should focus on research: Nowfel

Deputy Minister for Education Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel today said most private universities were not playing their due role in creating knowledge through research.

He said these universities were thinking on commercial lines but they should dedicate themselves to research.

Barrister Nowfel said though some institution had contributed to higher education, substantially, but many were lagging behind.

The deputy minister said this while addressing the second convocation ceremony of Premier University as its chief guest.

Nowfel urged the management of private universities to change their mind-set.

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on assuming power in 2008 enacted the Private University Act which allowed us to guide the private universities.

Mentioning the students’ role, the deputy minister said that in developed countries, Alumni facilitate the job placement of students.

Despite the difference of opinions among students, we all should unite for the cause of education.

UGC Chairman Professor Dr Kazi Shahidullah presided over the function, while founder Vice-Chancellor of East-West University and former Governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Farash Uddin and Vice Chancellor of Premier University Dr Anupom Sen spoke as convocation speakers.
