Protests continue against VC at JU

Jahangirnagar University teachers and students continued their demonstration on Thursday for the removal of the vice-chancellor Professor Farzana Islam for her alleged involvement in corruption and irregularities in development projects.

Under the banner of Jahangirnagar against Corruption over 70 teachers and students brought out a protest procession carrying black flags from the social science faculty building at about 1:00pm amid entrance examinations taken by thousands of admission seekers.

The procession ended in a rally at university Shaheed Minar.

Addressing the rally, Bangladesh Students Union activist Rakibul Rony said, ‘We, all, know that the VC had given secret commission to the BCL leaders from taxpayer’s money. Three of the BCL leaders had already confessed to the bribery and corruption. The VC had lost her moral right to the post. She should resign from her position otherwise the general students will compel her to quit.’

Environmental Sciences professor Khobir Uddin said, ‘It is degrading that she still holds the vice-chancellor post. She should resign. We had given her an ultimatum till October 1. If she doesn’t resign, we will besiege her where she will be found.’

Students started protests on August 23 demanding judicial inquiry into the reported involvement of the vice-chancellor and her family in corruption and mismanagement of Tk 1445 crore development projects on the campus.

Teachers and students demanded resignation of the VC as an initiative to launch a judicial inquiry faltered on September 18.

It has been alleged that the VC managed the Bangladesh Chhatra League JU unit leaders with Tk 1.6 crore from the development fund. Three of the BCL activists had already confessed to their involvement with the secret commission sharing incident.

Among others, teachers Rayhan Rhyne, Tarek Reza, Najmul Hasan Taluqder, Abdul jabbar Hawladar, Kamrul Ahsan, Anwarullah Bhuiyan, Nurul Islam, Ezharul Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Najmul Hasan Taluqder and leaders and activists of different cultural and political organisations were present at the rally.
