Qawmi students never become militants: Home Minister

Staff Reporter |

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal yesterday expressed his optimism that students and teachers of Qawmi madrashas can never fall prey to militancy as the madrasha education in no way paves the way for breeding militants.

“People from Teknaf to Tetulia have stood against militancy. Our law enforcement agencies are fighting the menace putting their lives at risk,” he told a rally of Islamic preachers.

Bangladesh United Islami Party, Dhaka City North, organized the rally on “Alem Olama rally against terrorism and militancy” at Azampur Government Priamry School playground in the city’s Uttara area.

Awami League presidium member and former home minister Advocate Sahara Khatun joined the function as chief guest while Food Minister Advocate Md. Qamrul Islam was present as special guest.

Asaduzzaman said Bangladesh is not only a country of Muslims but a non-communal and secular nation. “People of all religions are performing their respective religious rites peacefully here”, he added.

The home minister said the terrorists are now out to use many English medium students in their militant activities after failing to derail the Olamas.

Advocate Sahara Khatun said Islam has no link with terrorism and militancy as the holy religion does not approve of killing human beings.

Qamrul Islam said the people of Bangladesh are pious but not fanatics. He said the terrorists are undermining Muslims around the world by killing innocent people.

“The terrorists are instigating people to promote militancy by misinterpreting Islam,” the minister said.
