Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman yesterday said the government would take initiatives to hang circulars in front of the head teacher’s offices at all 64,000 primary schools in the country, banning corporal punishment to discipline students.
“We will do this so that the teachers and guardians can see it every day,” he told reporters after a meeting at Bangladesh secretariat in the capital.
The minister said the teachers would have to undertake to comply with the code of conduct when they were being recruited.
Representatives of Campaign for Popular Education (Campe), Save the Children, Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (Blast) submitted recommendations in this connection to the minister.
Rasheda K Choudhury, executive director of Campe, said a recent survey revealed that the corporal punishment was still being meted out to the pupils at many schools.
Earlier, in January, 2011, the High Court declared corporal punishment for children at educational institutions illegal and unconstitutional.
