Teachers injured by AL activists in Jhenidah

Jhenidah Correspondent |

Seven teachers of Haripur High School in Jhenidah Sadar upazila were injured as a few local Awami League (AL) activists attacked them yesterday over formation of school managing committee (SMC).

The injured are acting headmaster Jesmin Nahar, Nur-Islam, Swapan Kumar, Rezaul Islam, Atiar Rahman, Fatema Khatun and Jobbarul Islam.

Jesmin Nahar, Nur-Islam and Swapan Kumar were admitted to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital.

As a sequel to a conflict over formation of the SMC, some local AL activists went to the school with sticks and started beating the teachers around 11:00am yesterday, locals and police said.

Two teachers took shelter in nearby Haripur Government Primary School and panicked students fled from there.

As the news spread, the rival group equipped with sharp weapons and iron rods went to the spot. By the time, the earlier attackers fled away.

Maulana Jobbarul Islam, religious teacher of Haripur High School, said local AL leader Mahfuza Taher was former managing committee chairman of the school while Alamgir Hossain Montu was the headmaster.

“After being elected as the new chairman, Mohammad Ali, a village doctor of Bishoykhali Bazar, suspended the headmaster three months ago.

“Montu filed a case with a Jhenidah court and after hearing the court ordered his resuming the charge of headmaster. But acting headmaster Jesmin Nahar and her loyalists prevented Montu from joining the post and it led to an agitation in the area a few days ago. Former chairman Mahfuza Taher filed a case with a Jhenidah court accusing 16 people including six teachers.

“On Thursday morning six teachers including acting headmaster Jesmin Nahar went to appear before the court. Taking the opportunity, Mahfuza Taher along with her 7/8 loyalists entered the school and beat up the teachers.

“We are deprived of salary for a year due to a conflict over formation of the school managing committee,” Jabbarul said.

Jhenidah Sadar Police Station Officer in Charge Hasan Hafizur Rahman said the incident occurred as local AL leaders and activists got divided over formation of the school managing committee.

The situation is under control now, he said.

Mahfuza Taher could not be contacted as her mobile phone was switched off.

Acting headmaster Jesmin Nahar blamed the former managing committee chairman for yesterday’s inhuman attack on teachers.
