16 get death sentence for killing Nusrat

A Feni court on Thursday awarded death sentence to 16 people, including SM Sirajuddoula, the prime accused in Nusrat murder case, for killing the madrassah girl.  

The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Feni delivered the verdict in Thursday morning.

On March 27, principal Sirajuddoula sexually harassed madrassah student Nusrat Jahan Rafi at his office. Her mother filed a case against the principal on the following day.

On April 6, a group of people poured kerosene on Nusrat and set her afire for refusing to withdraw the case against the principal after he had been arrested and subsequently suspended.

On April 10, Nusrat lost her battle for life at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. On July 3, a Feni court took cognisance of the charges against the suspended madrassah principal in the case filed for sexually harassing Nusrat.

The accused in the case of killing Nusrat are— madrassah principal SM Sirajuddoula, Awami League leader Ruhul Amin, Shahadat Hossain Shamim, Nur Uddin, Imran Hossain Mamun, Hafez Abdul Quader, Iftekhar Uddin Rana, councillor Maksud Alam alias Moksud, Kamrunnahar Moni, Saifur Rahman Mohammad Zobair, Javed, Umme Sultana Popy, Mohiuddin Shakil, Mohammad Shamim, Abdur Rahim Sharif and Absar Uddin.
