Bangla should be medium of higher education: Anisuzzaman

Staff Reporter |

Eminent educationist Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman said that Bangla should be the medium of instruction in higher education in the country on Tuesday (27 Feb).

“Experts should write academic books in Bengali, otherwise it will be difficult to study in Bengali language. Only memorization in English is not effective in higher education,” said Anisuzzaman. He was addressing a symposium on “Bengali Language in the backdrop of internationality” this evening at VIP lounge of Jatiya Press Club in the capital.

United Nations Association of Bangladesh (UNAB) organised the programme in observance of International Mother Language Day.

Prof Anisuzaman said that sufficient terminologies have already been made which are congenial for higher education in Bangla medium.

“Dr Kudrat-e-Khuda wrote academic books of chemistry for higher education in Bangla. But the number of textbooks in Bengali is being deteriorated,” he added.

The veteran academic urged to take necessary steps to preserve the languages of indigenous community.

“There are six to seven thousand languages in the world but many languages are losing day by day. We should respect all the mother languages,” he added.

He also said that we should apprise the entire world of what had happened on February 21 as it is declared by UNESCO as International Mother Language Day.

Professor Biswajit Ghosh, Vice-Chancellor of Rabindra University, delivered keynote speech.

Secretary (Asia & Pacific) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mahbub Uz Zaman and UNAB Secretary General Syed Mohammad Shahed also spoke, among others, at the programme.
