Boys dropout in secondary education increases

The dropout rate of boys in secondary education increased last year, according to the draft report of Bangladesh Education Statistics 2018, presented on Sunday.

The report also showed that the completion rate of boys in secondary education decreased simultaneously while the dropout rate of girls still remained high. 

The draft report was presented at a dissemination workshop, organised by Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics, at its office in the capital. 

BANBEIS prepares the Annual Education Survey report every year with updated information on different aspects of post-primary education. 

The draft report showed that the dropout rate of boys in secondary education level was 36.01 per cent in 2018, up from 33.43 per cent in 2017. 

The dropout rate of girls stood at 40.19 per cent in 2018, slightly reduced from 41.52 per cent in 2017. All together the dropout rate stood at 37.62 per cent in 2018, decreased from 37.81 per cent in 2017. Secondary education completion rate of all students is 62.38 per cent in 2018 –63.99 per cent for boys and 59.81 for girls. 

In 2017, the rate was 62.19 per cent for all students – 66.57 for boys and 58.48 per cent for girls. 
The survey was conducted in 41,905 post-primary level educational institutions, including schools, colleges, madrassahs, school and colleges, technical and vocational institutes, professional educational institutions, teachers’ training institution, medical and nursing colleges, universities and English medium schools across the country. The survey period was October 1 to October 10 in 2018.
