CU forms body to investigate Amdadul's 'abduction'

Desk Report |

Chittagong University has formed a three-member probe body to investigate the “abduction” of a zoology teacher aspirant before his viva voce exam.

The committee was asked to submit its report within a short time, Assistant Professor Helal Uddin, the head of the probe body, said yesterday.

He said he would sit on Sunday with the other members of the committee and try to submit the report within a week.

Assistant Proctor Pranab Mitra Chowdhury and Assistant Proctor Mizanur Rahman were made member secretary and member respectively of the probe body.

Md Amdadul Haque, who received a prime minister's gold medal for his academic achievements, was barred by some activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League on March 27 when he came to the university to attend a zoology department's lecturer recruitment examination.

Talking to The Daily Star on Monday, Amdadul said he went to the Registrar Building at around 9:00am. “When I was waiting to enter the lift, former assistant secretary of BCL CU unit Sharif Uddin, and BCL activists Anowar Hossain, Asif Mahmud Shuvo, Moksed Ali alias Nilu Pramanik, Jahidul Hasan, Rafiqul Islam and Asir Uddin kidnapped me and took me to CU Central Field area.

“They demanded extortion from me.” He claimed that as he did not comply with their demand, the BCL men beat him up.

“Later, they took me to CU Pagoda and beat me up again,” he said, adding that they also took away his cell phones and Tk 5,000.

The BCL men then allegedly held him for around three hours till noon, and later handed him over to Hathazari Police Station, branding him as an Islami Chhatra Shibir activist.

Admitting the incident later, BCL leader Sharif Uddin claimed Amdadul was involved in Shibir politics. “Amdadul led the clash between Shibir and BCL in 2012. Many students and others witnessed the incident and told us about him. That's why we beat him up,” he added.

Amdadul filed a case in this connection on March 31 with a Chattogram court, accusing seven BCL men of criminal intimidation, kidnap, confinement, theft and attempted murder.

He also lodged a written complaint with the CU vice-chancellor on March 30 and demanded the viva voce examination be taken again.
