Digital Security Act is draconian: TIB

Desk Report |

Transparency International Bangladesh’s (TIB) Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman has dubbed the Digital Security Act as draconian and gravely concerning.

Speaking at a programme at Dhaka University, he said the law will not only curb freedom of speech in the country, but also restrict free journalism and research.

Section 32 of the Digital Security Act re-imposes two notorious official security acts of the British colonial era which would take the country backwards, he added.

"The Digital Security Act is also contrary to the spirit of Liberation War. We believe the present government upholds the spirit of our Liberation War… but this is not acceptable," he said.

Dr Iftekharuzzaman was speaking at a human chain programme arranged by TIB on occasion of International Right to Know Day at Dhaka University's Teacher-Student Centre (TSC).
