Early marriage bid foiled in Tangail

A schoolgirl was saved from child marriage at Boldiata village in Dhanbari upazila of the district on Monday.

The victim is seventh grader Sharmin Akhter, 13, daughter of Tara Miah of the village.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shamim Ara Rimi said Sharmin’s parents arranged the girl’s marriage without her consent.

“Sensing her marriage arrangement, Sharmin came to my office and informed me about the matter. I along with police rushed to the spot and stopped the marriage,” said the UNO.

However, the girl’s father and bridegroom managed to flee the scene, sensing the presence of the UNO.

Later, the UNO took undertaken from the girl’s mother not to marry her off before she reaches 18.
