HSC pass rate, GPA-5 decrease

The average pass rates and the number of GPA5 scorers in Higher Secondary Certificate and equivalent examinations have seen a drastic fall in 2017.

This year, the pass rate is 68.91 per cent in HSC and equivalent exams under eight general education boards and madrasha and technical education boards, 5.79 per cent less than 74.70 per cent in the previous year.

Similarly, the number of GPA5 scorers dropped to 37,726 in 2017 from 58,276 in the previous year.

Out of 1,183,686 candidates, 815,678 succeeded in the HSC examinations in 2017.

Out of 1,203,640 candidates, 8,99,150 passed in 2016 which saw a 5.10 per cent hike compared to the pass rate in 2015.

Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Sunday said that the success rate was reduced compared to the previous year due to proper evaluation of the answer scripts in the current year.

He was speaking at a press conference on HSC and equivalent results in 2017.

Earlier in the morning, the education minister, along with chairmen of all the education boards, handed over copies of the results to prime minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban.

Later, the minister formally announced the results at a press conference at his ministry.

The examinees would get the results from their centres, education board websites and cellphones through SMS shortly after the press conference. The results will also be available on the website www.educationboardresults.gov.bd

The average pass rate in the eight general education boards is 66.84 per cent while 33,242 candidates secured GPA5.

In the Rajshahi education board, the pass rate is 71.31 per cent and 5,294 candidates secured GPA5. In 2016, the pass rate was 75.40 per cent and 6,073 candidates secured GPA5.

In the Dinajpur education board, the pass rate is 65.44 per cent and 2,987 candidates secured GPA5. In 2016, the pass rate was 70.64 per cent.

In the Jessore education board, the pass rate is 77.02 per cent and 1,815 candidates secured GPA5. In 2016, the pass rate was 83.42 per cent.

In the Barisal education board, the pass rate is 70.28 per cent and 815 candidates secured GPA5. In 2016, the pass rate was 70.13 per cent and 787 candidates secured GPA5.

In the Sylhet education board, the pass rate is 72 per cent and 700 candidates secured GPA5. In 2016, the pass rate was 68.59 per cent and 330 candidates secured GPA5.

In the madrasha education board, the pass rate is 77.02 per cent and 1,815 candidates secured GPA5. In 2016, the pass rate was 88.19 per cent.

In the technical education board, the pass rate is 81.33 per cent and 2,669 candidates secured GPA5. In 2016, the pass rate was 84.57 per cent and 6,586 candidates secured GPA5.
