International Literacy Day today Like other countries, Bangladesh is observing the International Literacy Day today (8 september) in a befitting manner.

“Literacy and skills development” is the global theme this year which aims to promote awareness of the importance and relevance of literacy and adult learning.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages marking the day.

The inaugural programme of the day would be arranged at Jatiya Natyashala (National Theatre Hall) of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at 9:00am where Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman will be present as the chief guest. Different government and private organisations will also hold various programmes to mark the day.

Commemorative postal stamps and posters will be released, special supplements will be published, rallies will be brought out and major roads will be decorated marking the day.

The International Literacy Day is celebrated throughout the world marking the 52nd anniversary of the World Congress of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy, held in Tehran, Iran in 1965.

Following the Tehran recommendation, UNESCO proclaimed September 8 as the International Literacy Day.
