IU expels five students over ragging

The authorities of Islamic University in Kushtia on Wednesday expelled five of its students including a female one from the university temporarily for ragging newly enrolled students at the university.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of academic committee with IU vice-chancellor in the chair, IU registrar office officials said.

The suspended five students are, Mehedi Hasan, Ahmed Zubayer Siddique, Muhit Hasan, Mehedi Hasan Roman and Sumaiya Khatun. All are second year students of social welfare department of the university.

IU acting registrar SM Abdul Latif told New Age that the university vice-chancellor M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari issued the expulsion order against the students for ragging three new female students of the same department.

The university authorities also formed a three-member probe body headed by Social Sciences faculty dean Nasim Banu to investigate into the incident and asked the body to submit its report within seven working days, he added.

Vice-chancellor M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari told New Age that they would take legal action against the students after getting report from the body.
