JU authorities expel three students

The Jahangirnaga University authorities on Monday expelled three of its students and suspended two others for two years for their involvement in a mugging incident on the campus at Savar in Dhaka on Sunday.

JU acting registrar Rahima Kaniz said, ‘The university authorities have declared the expelled students unwanted in the campus area. They will not be allowed to stay at the dormitories and take part in the academic activities. If they disobey the authorities’ decision, the authorities will take legal action against them.’

The decision was taken following the recommendation of disciplinary board through an emergency syndicate meeting, headed by the university vice-chancellor Professor Farzana Islam on Monday night, Rahima said.

The expelled students are — Sohel Rana, Md Mostafizur Rahman and Yea Rafiu Shikdar, first year students of public administration department while the suspended are — Md Sajib Kazi and Asif Ahmed, first year students of Bangla department; they all are residents of Shahid Raffiq Jabbar hall.

The accused were reportedly activists of Shahid Raffiq Jabbar Hall unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, ruling Awami League-backed student organisation, and followers of JU BCL president Jewel Rana.

On Sunday, Md Zahidur Rahman Arnab, a student of evening programme of the Institute of Business Administration, filed a complaint with JU proctor Associate Professor Shikdar Md Zulkarnine against the five for mugging valuables from him and his girlfriend. As per his allegation, the accused snatched ornaments from his girlfriend, assaulted them and demanded Tk 25000 from them as ransom.

JU BCL president Jewel Rana claimed that none of the accused was involved with the organisation.
