JU students besiege admin building

The students of Jahangirnaar University besieged the university’s administrative building for indefinite period demanding the withdrawal of vandalism and attempt to murder case filed against 56 students by university administration.

As per their schedule, the agitating students laid a siege to the building at 8:00am this morning under the banner ‘Pratibader nam Jahangirnagar’.

For their sit in progamme, the vice-chancellor and pro-vice-chancellor did not attend their offices and the administrative activities halted.

Around, 11:00am, a group of teacher lead by JU teacher association president Farid Ahmed sat with the administration in order to resolve the matter latter they representative sat with a group of agitating students around 2:00pm.

Nazmul Hossain, secretary of JU Sanskritik Jote told New Age that, ‘We have placed a four-point charter of demands including withdrawal of case, reorganise of investigation committee, and ensuring safety on road, We just want to withdrawal of case by August 7’.

‘We do not know how they would withdraw the case. We have given enough time to the administration but they are yet to take any steps to withdraw the case,’ added Nazmul.

Meantime, JU authority issued a notice signed by JU registrar on Sunday night to retain from any kinds of movement which hampered the academic life.

Earlier on July 17, four agitating students ended their hunger strike after the university authorities assured them of withdrawing the case filed by filed by registrar Abu Bakr Siddique.

Two JU students were killed as a bus hit a human hauler carrying them on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar’s C&B bus stand area on May 26.

Afterwards, agitating students blocked the highway demanding speed breakers there. But police fired rubber bullets and teargas shells to disperse them.

Later, they besieged the VC’s residence. During the demonstration, 42 JU students were held and later shown arrested in the vandalism case.
