Knowledge and skills development should be the main target of education, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid (MP) said yesterday.
“Future life is nothing without education; the minister viewed and urged the students to work for achieving goals in their respective arena.
He was addressing as the chief guest on the Platinum jubilee (75 years) anniversary of Government Women College in Khulna.
Describing development works of the present government, the Education Minister underscored on technical education instead of traditional education.
Currently a total of 12 per cent students are reading technical education which was one per cent earlier, he said adding that the government has taken multifaceted programmes including free distribution of textbooks, mid-day meal, school uniform and stipend.
He also underscored the need of modern, technical and information Technology (IT) based education for building a develop and digital Bangladesh by 2021.
Nahid called upon the teachers to educate the children from tender age about practicing principles and values to raise them up as the ideal citizens of the country.
Terming teachers are the dignified citizens of the country, he said they should not be frustrated, government is working to solve their problem with limited resources.
He urged all the members of his ministry as well as teachers and students to devotees themselves in building a hunger and illiterates free happy, prosperous and develop Bangladesh.
Chaired by the Principal of Government Women College Md. Abdul Aleem, State Minister for Fisheries and Live Stock Naryan Chandra Chanda, MP, Talukder Abdul Khaleque, MP, Begum Monnuzan Sufian, MP, and Administrator of Khulna District council Sheikh Harun-ur Rashid addressed as the special guests.
Vice-Principal and convener of Platinum Jubillee implementing committee professor Manjurul Islam delivered the welcome speech. A total of 10,127 women students are reading and at least 82 teachers and 66 employees are working at the college. A total of 12 honours and 6 masters courses along with higher secondary and pass courses running in the college .
Established by late Roy Bahdur Ghosh on July 18 in 1940, the name of the college was Rajendra Kumar Girls College. The first campus of the college was at Coronation Girls School while the second campus was at Khulna City Law College.
Later, the campus was shifted at its own land at Boyra area in 1965 and turned it as a government college in 1968.
Former law maker Habibun Nahar, joint secretary of the education ministry Molla Jalal uddin, executive engineer of the directorate of education facilities Dewan Md. Hamjala, deputy commissioner of Khulna Nazmul Hasan, teachers, ex-students, government officials, among others, attended the function.
