The body of the university student, who went missing on Sunday in a river at Companiganj upazila in Sylhet, was recovered from the river on Tuesday night.
Companiganj police officer-in-charge Tajul Islam confirmed the news of recovering the body of Hasanur Rahman Abir, 24, a third-year civil engineering student of a private university and son of Matiur Rahman of Chowkidekhi in Sylhet city.
He said local people saw the floating body of Abir in the Dhalai River in Bunker Area of the upazila.
‘The police rushed to the spot immediately after getting the news and handed over the victim’s body to his family at around 10:30pm,’ the police officer said.
Earlier on Sunday noon, Abir went missing while he was swimming along with his friends in the Dhalai River in Sada Pathar area, a tourist spot beside Bholaganj stone quarry in the upazila.
A divers’ team of Fire Service and Civil Defence conducted operation in phases to rescue Abir.
