RU BCL president among 7 sued for extortion

A local trader has sued seven leaders of Rajshahi University unit Bangladesh Chhatra League including its president for extortion, issuing death threat, and looting litchi orchard.

Chhatra League leaders and activists on Wednesday at a demonstration demanded withdrawal of the case filed against their including its RU unit president Golam Kibria.

Over two hundred activists formed a human chain in front of the university central library to press home their demand.
Addressing the human chain, Chhatra League activists said the case was baseless and fabricated and nothing but a conspiracy against Chhatra League. It was filed only to harass the leaders, they said.
They demanded immediate withdrawal of the case.

Among others, the university unit vice-presidents Rasel Hossain, Nazmul Islam Sajal, Swarup Saha Supto, and Habibullah Nixon, deputy religious affairs secretary Tawhidul Islam Durjoy, and executive member Nazmul Haque spoke at the human chain. Local businessman Abdullah Ibne Monowar filed a case against 15/20 men including seven leaders and activists including RU unit Chhatra League president Golam Kibria.

The other accused are — vice-president Saddam Hossain, information and research secretary Mahmudur Rahman Kanon, deputy international affairs secretary Mehedi Hasan Ashiq, activists Mehedi Hasan Bijoy, and Md Akash.

In the case statement, Abdullah Ibne Monowar stated that RU Chhatra League president Golam Kibria, along with 15/20 men equipped with local arms, went to the Godagari litchi orchard, which he took lease from RU authority, on May 7 and demanded Tk 2 lakhs as extortion.

Later on May 9, Chhatra League activists beat up the guard when he barred them to pluck litchi and looted all the litchis worth of Tk 1,50,000, the case statement read.
