Ruling Awami League-backed student body Bangladesh Chhatra League on Friday (9th March) suspended its Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology unit committee following an internal clash at the university’s Shahid Abdul Hamid Hall that left the eight leaders and activists injured.
A release singed by Chhatra League president Saifur Rahman Sohag and general secretary SM Jakir Hossain said that an emergency meeting of the central executive committee on Friday made the decision.
It also notified university unit president Naim Rahman Nibir and general secretary Chowdhury Mahfuzur Rahman Topu to explain in 24 hours why organisational actions would not be taken against them for violating organisation’s rules.
Earlier on Thursday, followers of Naim and Chowdhury Mahfuzur clashed at Shahid Abdul Hamid Hall of the university over previous enmity injuring eight leaders and activists of both the two groups, including university unit vice-president Abid Hasan Mitul, joint secretary Rafi, publicity secretary Mahathir, sports secretary Robin and activists Imran and Rahat.
Hall sources said that three crude bombs were exploded and glasses, chairs, doors and windowpanes of the hall were vandalised during the clash.
RUET students’ welfare assistant director Siddhartha Sankar alleged that the police did not take any action to ease the clash.
‘We informed the police before the beginning of the clash. They came to the hall, but did not enter despite our repeated requests, rather they waited until the finishing the clash,’ he alleged.
Motihar Police Station officer-in-charge denied the allegation. He said that cops rushed the hall gate, but found none of the university authority or hall authority for permission to enter the hall gate as it was locked.
‘We phoned the university authority and the district AL leaders and took the situation under control,’ he said.
Hall provost Robiul Awall said that he visited the students at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital and necessary steps would be taken over the incident after discussion with the university authorities.
Additional police were deployed on the campus to avert further unwanted incidents.
