Schoolgirl rescued from early marriage

MarrigeA student of class six was rescued yesterday from early marriage. In this case her (schoolgirl) mother was jailed for one month by a mobile court at Monirambari area in Muktagachha upazila of the district on Sunday for trying to marry off her underage daughter.

She is Kulsum Begum, 30, wife of Mujibur Rahman of Monirambari. Kulsum and her husband Mujibur Rahman arranged the marriage of their daughter, 13, a Class VI student of a local madrasa, to a youth of Sadar upazila of Jamalpur district, said Mahmudul Haque, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Muktagacha Police Station.

Being informed, police rushed to the spot and took the girl and her mother to the police station, but sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the girl’s father and guests fled the scene.

Later, Kulsum was produced before the mobile court of Dr Umme Afsari Johra, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Muktagachha, who handed down the verdict.
