Scrap fee hike at CCC-run schools

Chittagong Correspondent |

Demonstrators, protesting against the increase in tuition fees of Chittagong City Corporation-run schools, were allegedly manhandled by police during their attempt to submit a memorandum to the mayor yesterday.

At a press conference at Chittagong Press Club, guardians and students of CCC-run schools also alleged that police seized a camera from one of the demonstrators.

Denying the manhandling allegation, Md Jashim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said the camera, which was seized because its owner introduced himself as a journalist but could not show his identity card, was returned later.

On behalf of the mayor, CCC Security Officer Kamal Uddin received the memorandum from two representatives from the guardians in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, Chittagong city unit, brought out a procession from Cheragi Pahar Intersection to New Market Intersection protesting the “manhandling”.

Tomorrow, the demonstrators will stage a rally before the Central Shaheed Minar in the port city in protest and to press home their demand for scrapping the tuition fees which have been almost doubled.
