Teacher indicted on child porn charges

Desk Report |

The former Russell High School mathematics teacher arrested last week on child pornography charges was indicted Tuesday, according to Boyd County Commonwealth’s Attorney Rhonda Copley.

Samuel Beason, 47, of Westwood faces six felony charges under the indictment, including one charge of unlawful use of electronic means originating or received within the Commonwealth to induce a minor to engage in sexual or other prohibited activities and five charges of possession or viewing of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor, according to Copley.

Indictments had not been processed at the Boyd County circuit clerk’s office Tuesday afternoon so no information was available on when Beason will next appear in court.

Beason was arrested March 26 at his home by Ashland police in the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit. Police served a search warrant during the arrest. He had been a mathematics teacher at Russell High School for about 15 years. He resigned following his arrest.

Beason had been scheduled for a preliminary hearing in district court Wednesday but that hearing will be canceled since he was indicted. Jail records show he remains in the Boyd County Detention Center on $5,000 cash bond.
