‘ please take the right side’ : protesters to Tofail

Desk Report |

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Wednesday got stuck for a while amid student protests as the agitators stopped his car for driving on the ‘wrong side’ of a road near Shahbagh in the city.

Minister Tofail was, however, heard saying that he followed the route as he wanted to talk to them -- protesters.

The incident took place on the minister’s way back home around 1:45 pm.

The protesters were seen and heard chanting slogans, “We want justice” and “Law is equal for all” surrounding the Commerce Minister when he tried to talk to them.

“Sir, just a request…we request you, please take the right side, kindly go back. We appreciate your cooperation,” one of the protesters was heard in a video clip as saying.

The Commerce Minister, who at one stage got into his car, said he did not take the wrong side but he came only to talk to the protesters.

The protesters recalled his great role as a student leader during Bangabandhu’s time and sought a judicious solution from him

Another student was heard saying, “We seized a bus and the driver didn’t have the licence. We requested police to look into it. Police released the bus taking bribe. Sir, why are the police personnel of Bangladesh of such nature?”

Earlier, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan urged the agitating students to withdraw their blockades and go back to their classes as the government has fulfilled their all the demands.

Talking to reporters at the Secretariat, the minister said the drivers of the killer buses have been arrested and remanded, while the route permit and registration of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan has been cancelled.

Students from different schools and colleges took to the streets for the fourth consecutive day on Wednesday (1 August) demanding punishment of the driver responsible for Sunday’s accident that killed two college students in the city and resignation of the Shipping Minister for his comments on the accident.

Students of different schools and colleges blocked Shantinagar, Mouchak, Farmgate, Matuail, Jatrabari, Babu Bazar Bridge, Kabi Nazrul Government College road, Tongi, House Building road in Uttara, Mirpur road and Science Laboratory areas for hours.
